About Us

What started out as a personal project, quickly grew into much more.

My name is Doug McFarlin, and I founded Dmac Racks to provide quality gear to adventurers like me, and for vehicles that may have been overlooked by the big manufacturers.

I have always enjoyed the mountains and outdoors on foot, with a pack on my back.  I get the most joy by spending time at or above tree line.  I believe the most beautiful views and secret sanctuaries are reserved for those who are willing to put in the work (and sometimes suffering) to reach them.

Back country Colorado

I wanted to give my family the opportunity to share those same high elevation experiences, minus the (great) difficulty and time that is associated with getting to those stunning locations on foot.  In 2019 we hit our first off-road trails in a borrowed Jeep, and they loved it.

To my surprise, I loved it too, and I have been back to the offroad trails of Colorado every year since then, exploring deeper into the backcountry each time with a combination of four wheels, a pair of boots, a pack… and the ability to carry a lot more gear in my trusty Toyota Tacoma truck.  But I was still limited without a roof rack.  And thus, it began…

With sudden access to remote alpine lakes, and the ability to carry a truck bed full of gear (in very uncool totes and tie-downs), I didn’t have a way of carrying a kayak, or a rooftop tent, and my mind reeled with seemingly endless possibilities if I just had that rack.

In order to expand my adventuring capability, it was time for a roof rack.  But after endless searches of many great products, I could find nothing that met all the specs and requirements I had in my head, so I decided to design and build my own.

Armed with my career as a mechanical engineer and a genuine love for building things and working with my hands, I built my first roof rack for my Tacoma.  As my family, friends, and engineering co-workers looked over my finished project, it was nearly unanimous feedback:

“This is an awesome design... you need to sell these.”

Soon I got requests from people to build one for their particular vehicle because they were having a tough time finding a roof rack for their rides.  I designed and built those requests, and my “clients” were ecstatic with the results.

Photos of those racks were posted on Facebook, and then our inbox blew up.

Now here we are, launching this web site and our online store so you can have your own Dmac Rack, too!
